The City of Round Rock has announced its intent to partner with Round Rock ISD for a proposed aquatic center, pending approval from voters in the Bond 2017 Election.
Round Rock City Manager Laurie Hadley announced a letter of intent had been established at the District’s April 20 Board of Trustees meeting, committing to a potential partnership for the aquatic center facility if approved by voters. The City of Round Rock, Round Rock ISD and the YMCA of Williamson County initially partnered for a feasibility study in 2016 to determine the need and desire for a facility in the Round Rock area. The aquatic center is included as a $22 million project in Bond 2017, which consists of funds to address the District’s needs.
“We are excited to announce our letter of intent to partner with Round Rock ISD for the aquatic center in our community,” Hadley said. “We look forward to continuing our strong partnership with the District. If the Bond is approved, we will work closely with the District to establish an aquatic center that provides world-class opportunities and programming for students.”
The proposed aquatic center would include practice space, diving boards, 22 short-course lanes, seating for up to 700 people, locker rooms and offices. The city’s participation would allow for the center to be expanded to host larger groups, including regional and state
meets.
The facility could host swimming and diving teams, but also serve as a space for elementary school water safety programs and therapy for special needs students.
“Our priority is to serve the students across all 110 square miles of Round Rock ISD, including the city of Round Rock, Northwest Austin, and Cedar Park,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Steve Flores said. “The city has been a great partner. The potential to build together allows us the opportunity to maximize utilization and efficiencies for a facility, pending voter approval.”
