The Teravista School Elementary Student Leadership Council (SLC) and its families visited the Williamson County Animal Shelter to read to animals in January as part of a year-long project for the group.
The students decided to read to the animals because they said it was a win-win situation. Both animals and kids enjoy spending time with each other and a good book.
“I enjoyed spending time with the animals,” said Katie Thompson, Teravista third-grade student. “I especially loved watching one family adopt a dog and another family adopt a cat. It was so cute.”
The SLC is a group of students who are representatives of the entire student body. One of the goals of the council is to do continuous service learning. At the beginning of the 2016-2017 school year, the group discussed possible ideas for service and narrowed the ideas down to three organizations. Classroom representatives returned to their classrooms and shared information about each organization. A school wide vote was held and the Williamson County Animal Shelter was chosen as the organization the students would support.
“It’s important that kids take an initiative and have their voices heard so they can make a difference in their own community,” said SLC Sponsor Amy Hurst. “I enjoy observing how passionate these kids are from kindergarten all they way up to fifth grade. Their ideas and actions are inspiring.”
The group provided baked goods at the Teravista Leadership Day on Feb. 17 in exchange for donations from participants. This fundraiser collected over $150 in donations for the shelter. During the month of March, the group will be collecting items from the shelter’s wish list as well as making toys for the animals.
