Joe Lee Johnson Elementary STEAM Academy Principal Gabi Niño was one of 16 principals from across a six-state region to be recognized for her leadership in literacy by the Texas Woman’s University (TWU) Department of Reading at the 2016 Billie J. Askew Reading Recovery and K-6 Institute held this past November in Hurst, TX.
“Mrs. Nino has been incredibly thoughtful in how she implements literacy programs on her campus,” said Dr. Connie Briggs, TWU Department of Reading chair. “She understands that on-going professional development is crucial for first-grade teachers. Round Rock ISD has every reason to be proud of the work that has been accomplished and the number of children and families who have benefited from its efforts.”
At the Institute, representatives from more than 250 schools were in attendance when TWU trainer team and Reading Recovery teacher leaders honored Niño for her passion for literacy and commitment to ensuring that every child learns to read and write in first grade.
“The most powerful language skill a human being can have is that of literacy,” Niño said. “It is our responsibility to gift children literacy. This gift will give them the power to own their future.”
TWU is a university training center for teacher leaders and trainers. Reading Recovery, an early literacy intervention, is recognized internationally for its success in shifting first-grade student’s early literacy achievements.
