Laurel Mountain Elementary School fourth-grade student Hannah Son has been named the first place winner of the Austin Family Magazine 2016 Young Writers Contest.

Students in fourth and fifth grade were invited to write a 75 to 300 word essay based on the prompt: “The best decision I ever made and why I think so.” Hannah centered her essay on her decision to learn how to read in kindergarten. Even through her struggles to learn, Hannah wrote about her will to persevere and become a successful reader.

“As a fourth-grader, reading is one of my strengths and I got a 100 on the STAAR,” Hannah said. “If I could say something to kids who have difficulty reading, I would say, ‘keep on reading and never give up’.”

As the first place winner, Hannah received a plaque to commemorate the award and a Kindle Fire tablet.

“Hannah is an exceptional writer and well deserving of this award,” Laurel Mountain Principal Jan Richards said. “We are proud to have Hannah represent Laurel Mountain and Round Rock in Austin Family Magazine.”
