Round Rock ISD elementary and middle school students have been selected to advance to the Texas State History Day and the state level of the National Geographic Bee after successfully topping the competition in regional contests.

Canyon Vista Middle School students earned group and individual awards at the Central Texas Regional History Day, held Feb. 25 under the theme of “Taking A Stand in History.”

Three students were selected to advance to the Texas State History Day competition in April, hosted by the Texas State Historical Association. State competitors have the opportunity to compete for awards and scholarships among students from 24 geographical regions across Texas.

Student who will advance to the state competition and their awards are listed below:

  • Aylin Tanriverdi and Vivian Lang, first place, junior division group website,
  • Anand Singh, first place, junior division individual performance “Jessie Owens against Aryan Supremacy.”

Around the world middle and high school students take their learning beyond the textbook with the annual National History Day Contest, according to the National Council for the Social Studies. The project-based contest provides students an opportunity to demonstrate their historical research skills through one of five categories: documentary, exhibit, paper, performance and website. Guided by an annual theme, students are encouraged to choose a topic that matches their personal interests.

Students from Canyon Creek Elementary School, Canyon Vista, Grisham and Walsh middle schools have qualified to compete in the state level of the National Geographic Bee after scoring within the top 100 students in the state on the 2016 State Bee qualifying test. Elliot will compete at the state bee in Bedford, Texas on March 31.
