The Round Rock ISD Board of Trustees approved the academic calendar for the 2017-2018 school year at its regular meeting Feb. 16.

A calendar committee comprised of District and campus administrators, as well as parents, designed the calendars in alignment with the most recent calendars.

The calendar committee considered the following parameters when creating the calendars:

  • The calendar must include 169 instructional days and 16 professional development days.
  • The District’s distinction as a District of Innovation (DOI) allows Round Rock ISD to begin classes earlier than the public school requirement of following the third Monday in August.
  • The calendar option features a full-week break at Thanksgiving and 13 school days in December.
  • The calendar features professional development on the following days: The Monday before school begins, Columbus Day, the final day prior to winter break in December and the day prior to students returning after winter break, President’s Day, and the day following Memorial Day.

The 2017-2018 calendar features a Dec. 22 – Jan. 5 break for students and staff to provide families with additional travel days during the holiday season, with students returning for the spring semester on Jan. 9. It also allows students the opportunity to complete the school year before Memorial Day.

The community review for the 2017-2018 calendar ran from Jan. 20 to Feb. 6, 2017. The majority of the respondents agreed with keeping a break of two weeks for winter.

The District had presented a split week break to the public during the review period; however, the calendar adjusted after reviewing public feedback.
