Round Rock ISD Superintendent of Schools Dr. Steve Flores was honored as the 2016 Citizen of the Year during the 49th annual Round Rock Chamber banquet on Jan. 31.

The Citizen of the Year award is given to an individual who exemplifies the qualities of leadership, character, family life, service and whose civic contributions have resulted in recent or current impact to the Round Rock community.

“We are proud as a District — from our Board of Trustees to all 54 schools serving 48,199 students — to be in a community that values education,” Dr. Flores said. “Throughout 110-square miles across North Austin to East Round Rock, our educators work tirelessly to meet the needs of every student. Thank you to the Round Rock Chamber for this honor and thank you to our talented staff, caring parents, and amazing students for making Round Rock ISD the Destination District for Public Schools.”

Mike Doss, the Chamber’s 2016 board chair, said that although it is challenging to just select one person for the top honor, Dr. Flores has shown dedication to his community by working tirelessly to create the Destination District for Public Schools. He has also helped further establish strong relationships between the school district and business community.

“The Round Rock community includes countless innovative and hardworking people, businesses and organizations, which makes this selection process more difficult each year,” Doss said.

Dr. Flores has served the students of Round Rock ISD as Superintendent of Schools since October 2013. As Superintendent he has led the District through the passing of the 2014 Bond, Strategic Plan and the District of Innovation initiative.
