Students from five Round Rock ISD schools traveled to Houston in November to compete in the 20th annual Texas K-12 Chess Championship.

Students from England, Laurel Mountain, Spicewood and Sommer elementary schools, Canyon Vista and Walsh middle schools and Westwood High School joined more than 400 students from across Texas who participated in the championship. The competition challenges students to compete as individuals and teams based on grade level. Trophies were awarded to the top 10 individuals and the top five schools in each grade.

The individual trophy winners are listed below:

  • Jacob Li, Spicewood, first grade champion,
  • Kalia Wang, Laurel Mountain, seventh place in third grade,
  • Anh Nhu Nguyen, Walsh, second place in sixth grade, Texas State sixth grade co-champion,
  • Christopher Aung, Laurel Mountain, fourth place in fifth grade,
  • Rohit Gundam, Laurel Mountain, fifth place in fifth grade,
  • Dang Minh Nguyen, Walsh, second place in eighth grade,
  • Alexander Quach, Westwood, fifth place in 12th grade,
  • Dhanvi Marrapu, Westwood, fourth place in ninth grade and
  • Sudharsan Ramapriya, Westwood sixth place in ninth grade.

The following teams received trophies:

  • Sharvi Nakkala, Akhil Kakarla and Mohit Mukkollu, Sommer, sixth place in third grade,
  • Anika Mandra, Shubh Laddha, Yash Laddha and Alexix Hwang, England, first place in third grade,
  • Christopher Aung and Rohit Gundam, Laurel Mountain, third place in fifth grade,
  • Dang Minh Nguyen and Pranav Venkatesh, Walsh, fourth place in eighth grade,
  • Dhanvi Marrapu and Sudharsan Ramapriya, Westwood, second place in ninth grade and
  • Ganesh Kumarappan, Wesley Yeung, Evan Lai and Nitin Akella, Canyon Vista, second place in sixth grade.
