Classes across Round Rock ISD will embrace computer science through Hour of Code activities, aimed at piquing an interest in computer programming languages and coding technologies.
During the week of Dec. 5-9, 2016, campuses will incorporate the Hour of Code tutorials into the school day. The tutorials, created for free use by Code.org, bring computer science to students in a fun, easy to understand way, using Disney and Minecraft themes to keep students of all ages engaged in the game-based tutorials.
“Knowledge and familiarity with computer science is becoming increasingly necessary for success in any field,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Steve Flores said. “By encouraging students to participate in Hour of Code activities across the District, Round Rock ISD is introducing thousands of students to essential skills in the modern world.”
Hour of Code is held in celebration of Computer Science Education Week, observed Dec. 5-11. The worldwide Hour of Code activities consist of 172 individual tutorials that students can access at all times to continue learning.
“Hour of Code is a fun way to get students excited about computer science,” said Lannon Heflin, Round Rock ISD director of instructional technology. “With tutorials catered to students, Hour of Code activities encourage collaborative learning by helping each other in an environment where students can take charge of their learning and work at their own pace.”
